Artistic Practice

Independent wood sculptor creating small-scale, hand-carved works that explore memory, resilience, and human experience through symbolic, figurative, and abstract forms. His practice treats wood as a material of time, fracture, and resistance, allowing natural irregularities to guide sculptural meaning.

Background

Paul Elkin comes to sculpture from a professional background in engineering, bringing structural awareness, material sensitivity, and a disciplined process to his artistic work. His connection to wood predates his formal artistic focus, rooted in a lifelong interest in working with natural materials and hands-on making.

Approximately seven years ago, he began an intensive exploration of wood carving as a sculptural language. What began as material curiosity developed into a sustained independent studio practice centered on symbolic form, thematic series, and the expressive potential of wood.
